Did you know that William Dawes is the great-great grandfather of Beman Dawes? William Dawes rode approximately 17 miles south of Boston with Paul Revere and Samuel Prescott. For America’s 250th anniversary, we’re hosting a 1.7 mile walk on April 18 and 19 through The Dawes Arboretum to commemorate this historical event!
Before the Challenge:
Pre-purchase admission tickets online or purchase tickets at the gate. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for kids. Children under 5 are always free. There are also discounted ways to get into The Arboretum, like memberships and library passes. This challenge is included within admission.
Bring your own pedometer. Apps that track your steps on your cell phone are acceptable. When you get to The Arboretum, register for the William Dawes Walking Challenge at our Visitors Center Deck.
This walking challenge must be complete in one day only, either on April 18 or 19.
Step counts from separate days can't be combined.
During the Challenge:
Watch the time. The challenge must be completed between 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. to earn a prize. Pace yourself, drink water and rest as needed. Take any trail you’d like to explore all the beautiful areas around Dawes. Try to reach 1.7 miles or approximately 3,500 steps.
After the Challenge:
Only the first 250 people to complete the challenge will receive a prize. Be sure to post your photos of the challenge on social media and tag us @thedawesarboretum using #DawesYearofHistory. We’re excited to see you soon to celebrate America’s 250th Birthday!
Special thanks to the Licking County Historical Alliance for assistance with this project.
