To celebrate 250 years since 1776, the Ohio Commission for the U.S. Semi quincentennial (America 250) has chosen a different theme each month to highlight and honor Ohio's rich history. This month, learn how to have the perfect picnic at The Dawes Arboretum to celebrate July’s theme: Ohio Gathers: Statewide Homecoming & Picnics!
The perfect day to have a picnic at The Arboretum is Sunday, July 12, from 4 - 7 p.m. during our Dawes Homecoming Community Picnic! Everyone is welcome and admission is free all day.
During this event, The Arboretum will provide popcorn, free drinks and ice cream (while supplies last). Dawes will host old-fashioned lawn games, live music and a historic barn dance.
Dawes’ Homecoming Community Picnic is modeled after The Pure Oil Company picnics that our co-founder, Beman Dawes, hosted for his employees and families beginning back in the 1920s. This is your chance to recreate history.
Grills and alcohol are not permitted.
Step 1: Make a stop in the gift shop
Did you forget anything for your picture-perfect picnic? Make sure to stop in our gift shop for snacks to satisfy your hunger, water to stay hydrated or mosquito spray to stay swat-free during your meal.
Step 2: Pick up an activity bag
Do you have little ones that need to be entertained? We have activity bags in our gift shop that offer a variety of activities like Trees, Friends in Nature or Forest Friends for an engaging visit. These bags are free to rent for the day and are first-come, first-serve.
Step 3: Find the best spot
There are many places to have a picnic around The Arboretum. During the event you can find picnic tables near Dawes Lake, around the Japanese Garden and at the pond near the Zand Education Center. If you want more privacy, bring a picnic blanket and find your favorite spot to take a seat and eat!
Step 4: Bring activities with you
Bring some activities with you! We want to make sure you maximize your time in the beauty of nature at Dawes. If you love to read, bring a book you’ve been meaning to dive into. Bring that sketchpad if you’re a master in artistry or bring a deck of cards if you love playing games.
Step 5: Enjoy your outing
Make sure to take in the sights and sounds of Dawes – the chirping of birds, the swaying of the trees and the warmth of the sun on your face.
