Are you a teen that loves nature and is interested in a unique opportunity to gain experience in leadership and mentorship in a safe, supported and exciting outdoor environment? Then look no further than The Dawes Arboretum’s brand new Counselor In Training program!

This program will allow kids between the ages of 14 and 17 to remain involved in Camp Dawes in a way that values their additional capabilities and stretches them to take on responsibility while still enjoying their favorite activities.

Once the program is completed, participants will:

  • Have a greater understanding and respect for nature
  • Learn new skills relating to their camp sessions
  • Gain collaboration, time management, conflict resolution, decision making and problem solving skills
  • Learn about the day-to-day behind-the-scenes operations of a summer camp
  • Learn about the responsibilities of various roles of those who operate the camp
  • Play a part in educating and assisting younger learners to become the best people they can be

To be considered for the Camp Dawes Counselor in Training Program, applicants must be 14 through 17 years old.  They must have an interest in serving as a leader and mentor to younger learners.

Participants must attend the training week which is held from June 8 - 10 from 9 am to 3 pm, and sign up for at least one week during the summer to serve as a Counselor in Training. Parent permission is required. They must have transportation to and from the site.

Participants will be required to follow all the policies of Camp Dawes. Counselors in Training act as role models for the younger campers and are therefore expected to adhere to higher standards.

Training and guidance will be provided by experienced Dawes team members.

To apply, fill out the Counselor in Training application and send it to learning@dawesarb.org. The deadline to apply is May 1. Final participants will be chosen after an interview process.
