As part of our summer-long mural exhibit, Artisans at the Arboretum, The Dawes Arboretum is proud to showcase the work of nine talented artists who have brought their creativity to our grounds. In this Meet the Artist series, we’re highlighting the people behind the paint—learning more about their inspiration, process, and what their murals mean to them. Today, we’re excited to introduce you to Hassan Qureshi, whose mural Where Nature Takes Flight can be found in the Learning Garden.

1. Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your background as an artist?

My passion has always been about capturing the natural world in a way that feels both visceral and contemplative. As I've grown as an artist, I've begun incorporating Arabic calligraphy into my work, exploring how the traditional artform can be incorporated into a layered nature themed artwork that is narrative-driven.

2. How would you describe your artistic style or the themes you explore in your work?

My artistic style centers on hyper-realism and the juxtaposition of contrasting themes. I’m always interested in creating visual tension that invites the viewer to pause and reflect.

3. What inspired your mural for Artisans at The Arboretum?

The great blue heron, Ohio’s largest bird, carries a spiritual and esoteric presence. I wanted to convey that sense of mystery and reverence in a way that felt meaningful for The Arboretum’s space.

4. Did the location or landscape of The Dawes Arboretum influence your piece in any way?

Absolutely! Being so close to the lake adds another dimension to the piece. It allows for a visual narrative as if the heron has leapt directly from the water and landed on the mural.

5. Can you walk us through your creative process from concept to completion?

My creative process always begins with a design on Procreate, followed by painting using brushes, sprays and acrylic paints.

6. What was the most rewarding or challenging part of working on this project?

One of the most rewarding moments was when a little bumblebee landed on one of the flowers I painted. That tiny gesture felt like a form of approval and it gave me a quiet boost of confidence I didn’t know I needed.

7. What do you hope visitors take away from seeing your mural?

A sense of wonderment and joy.

8. Where can people see more of your work or connect with you online?

They can find my work on instagram @hassanqart or purchase work at www.hassanqart.com
