History

Trees were one of Beman Dawes’ passions. While working in the lumber industry as a young man, Beman dreamed of providing people the opportunity to learn about the importance and beauty of trees. This passion was also present in his wife, Bertie, a self-taught naturalist and gardener. Together, their enthusiasm led to the creation of The Dawes Arboretum.

Once the Dawes family’s country home, the Daweswood House Museum contains a collection of 19th and 20th century antiques, collectibles and photographs that reflect the lifestyle and collecting interests of the founding family.
